Diabetes is an everyday challenge, and World Diabetes Day is set to honour those courageous individuals who persevere through this disease. It is also a day to raise awareness, and to dispel some of the misconceptions about diabetes.
Some quick facts about diabetes:
- 1 in 3 Canadians have diabetes or prediabetes
- Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in Canada, and a leading cause of heart attack, stroke, kidney dialysis, and foot amputations
- Screening for diabetes is easy, painless, and takes only 6 minutes
- First Nations people who are over the age of 40 and have a family history of diabetes are at higher risk for diabetes, and should be screened annually
- People with diabetes can live long and healthy lives
