We will be teaming up with the school in Yekooche and Takla to provide kids in the kitchen!
The projected goal of the program is to provide cooking classes for the school aged children in the communities. Cooking classes provide literacy, numeracy, social and emotional, self-esteem and life skills to the kids who participate. We will be able to work on a variety of skills with the children, injury prevention (kitchen safety), healthy eating and nutrition and mental health. Through providing cooking classes for the children, they learn to work together. The kids will be able to bring home the recipes and meals that we are making to share with their families. Not only are the children learning, they then become teachers to other members of the community.
We would like to be able to offer cooking classes to the children in Takla First Nation and Yekooche First Nation twice per month from December 2016 – March 2017. The cooking classes will take place in the communities. We will provide instruction, food and supplies. During these sessions we will be asking the community health nurse to provide information sessions on appropriate topics related to health and wellness. The teachers will also play a role in assisting with the cooking and providing follow up assignments for the students.
