Recognition is often thought of as something that flows from top to bottom in the workplace, however positive feedback from peers can be equally, if not more, impactful. Peers fully understand what it means to go through the day to day of their role and being publicly recognized by each other boosts morale and increases staff engagement.
In this age, a steady pay-cheque and a place to work are sometimes not enough to keep employees satisfied with their jobs. What matters to most employees is how they feel at work, and that their work reflects their own values.
As part of CSFS’ ongoing efforts to support staff, the organization launched the Snachailya Recognition Program in 2023. This program is hosted on our Sus Yah intranet and allows staff members to honour and appreciate each other for living out Carrier values and making a positive impact in their roles.
Compassion, Honesty, Integrity, Respect, Responsibility and Trust are the values CSFS has chosen to embody. While these are not all the Carrier values, they were outlined by our founding Elders and Matriarchs over 30 years ago to represent our organization. They are derived from the feast system and are often referred to as the “Potlatch principles”.
As CSFS continues to expand, it is important that everyone works together to foster a work culture that thrives on appreciation and recognition.
We honour our colleagues with online shout-outs, which are updated in real-time and displayed on Sus Yah, including an optional message of appreciation visible to all staff. Staff have the option to remain known or anonymous.
Here are some heartfelt examples of how coworkers are being recognized on Sus Yah for embodying Carrier values.
Compassion: “We act with empathy, kindness, and generosity.”
Honesty: “We are truthful and transparent in our intentions.”
Integrity: “We act in the best interest of others.”
Respect: “We treat everyone as a valued member of the team.”
Responsibility: “We take personal ownership for our actions.”
Trust: “We build trust through safety, respect, and reliability.”
CSFS staff have said that it feels great to be recognized on Sus Yah, and to have their work highlighted. That feeling is contagious too, as we have seen those who have been recognized pass it along by recognizing a staff member themselves.
