CSFS’s Burns Lake Foundry Receives Generous Donation from Rio Tinto

April 11, 2024

April 11, 2024 – Carrier Sekani Family Services (CSFS) is thrilled to announce a momentous step forward in the development of the Burns Lake Foundry centre with a generous contribution of $600,000 from Rio Tinto to go towards the construction and operation of the centre.

As construction progresses, this substantial donation will significantly bolster the resources and operations of the centre, ensuring its ability to positively impact the lives of young people in the Burns Lake area.

“With such a big endeavour as building a centre from the ground up to meet the needs of youth in Burns Lake, partnerships such as the contribution by Rio Tinto are critical as we develop infrastructure to support our services in better serving the community and member First Nations,” says Chief of Cheslatta Carrier Nation and CSFS Board Member, Chief Corrina Leween. “With Rio Tinto’s support, we are one step closer to the completion of the centre, which will help address the health and wellness needs of all young people aged 12 to 24 and their families in the Burns Lake area.”

“Rio Tinto is proud to support CSFS in their proactive approach to addressing mental health and providing essential support for young people in the Burns Lake community through the Foundry centre,” says Claudine Gagnon, Community and Social Performance General Manager, Atlantic, at Rio Tinto. “Rio Tinto is committed to projects that result in long-term outcomes, leaving a positive legacy for the community. The Burns Lake Foundry will undoubtedly serve as a cornerstone for positive change, fostering well-being among youth and their families. We are honoured to be part of this initiative and look forward to its lasting impact.”

In recognition of this invaluable support, CSFS and Rio Tinto will be hosting an Appreciation BBQ on April 12 from 4:00 – 5:00pm at the Lakes District Secondary School in Burns Lake. Community members are invited to join in for food and speeches from CSFS and Rio Tinto, and to learn more about programs and services that will be offered at Foundry. The event will serve as an opportunity for CSFS to express gratitude to our partner for their generosity, and for Rio Tinto to recognize the youth and community who helped shape the vision of this project and show support for the important void that Burns Lake Foundry will fill once in operation.

Carrier Sekani Family Services extends its sincere appreciation to Rio Tinto and all those who have contributed to Burns Lake Foundry. Together, we are creating a space where youth of Burns Lake can thrive, grow, and realize their full potential.
