Hadih, I’m Kelsey Spears, I am a Cree Metis woman residing on the beautiful Unceded Traditional Territory of the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation. I am the Calls for Justice Outreach worker for Carrier Sekani Family Services.
What are some of the main tasks that makes up your day-to-day?
Some of the work that I do includes advocating for the wellness and wellbeing of Indigenous women and girls. I do this by creating and maintaining awareness campaigns, prevention services such as workshops and one on one resource support, court support and family debriefs, as well as planning and participating in MMIWG centred community events.
What inspired you to work in this field?
From a young age I found myself invested in the well-being and safety of those around me, whether that be friends, family, colleagues and past clients in my work. I have a passion for social justice, women’s rights and making change, which ultimately lead me to this position, and career.
If you were a superhero, what would your power be and why?
I would have to say ... does Elphaba count? Because I recently watched Wicked, and she is the kind of superhero I would be! Fighting for the good of all, even if sometimes a little misunderstood.
What’s your go-to comfort food in the winter?
As a foodie this is a hard question. Mac n Cheese or anything with noodles and/or cheese, really.
What’s one thing you wish people knew about your role?
My role focuses on fulfilling and seeing through the 231 Calls for Justice, all while serving our 11-member Nation women, who battle against racism and gender-based violence, along with systems built to oppress. This can be very tough to navigate, but with that comes a great sense of purpose and passion to ensure a better outcome for many women facing difficulty and challenges.
