Highway of Tears 20th Anniversary Symposium

Highway of Tears 20th Anniversary Symposium

March 24, 2026

Carrier Sekani Family Services and the Highway of Tears Symposium Planning Committee invite you to the Highway of Tears 20th Anniversary Symposium.

This event marks 20 years since the 2006 Highway of Tears Symposium, when families, community leaders, and advocates came together to raise national awareness and call for action in response to the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit peoples (MMIWG2S+) along Highway 16.

The 2006 symposium produced 33 recommendations grouped under four key themes:
Victim Prevention
Emergency Planning and Team Response
Victim Family Counselling and Support
Community Development and Support

Twenty years later, this symposium offers a critical opportunity to come together again to honor the lives lost, uplift the voices of families and survivors, reflect on progress made, and strengthen our collective path forward rooted in justice, healing, and safety.

Join us in Prince George on April 7-10, 2026, for presentations, panel discussions, and progress reports centered on where we were, where we are and where we are going. This is a significant time to remember loved ones, reflect on what has changed, and renew commitments to community safety along Highway 16.
