March 31 is National Indigenous Languages Day, which highlights the rich linguistic heritage of Indigenous peoples around the world. It serves as an important reminder of the cultural diversity found within these languages and the urgent need to protect them from the threat of extinction. It is also a platform amplifying Indigenous voices and fostering greater appreciation for their linguistic heritage.
At Carrier Sekani Family Services (CSFS), we strive to promote and practice the ancestral knowledge and traditions together with the Nations we serve. We aim to continue to participate in preserving, promoting, and revitalizing our language, ensuring they remain active components in our work, heritage and wellbeing.
"Learning our language is vital in preserving our culture and identity," emphasizes Julian Lowley, Youth Services Manager and facilitator of the Niwh Khinek “Our Language” program at CSFS. "Studies have shown that Indigenous languages are going extinct across Canada. It is up to the next generation to learn their traditional language and keep our teachings alive."
There are continuous efforts aiming to revitalize Indigenous languages in communities, organizations, programs and with individuals like Julian leading the charge through the creation of the Niwh Khinek “Our Language” program. "Even at least one new next-generation fluent speaker will make all the difference," he adds, highlighting the transformative impact that individual commitment can have on language preservation.
"I encourage all members to connect with your Elders, grandparents, and other fluent speakers from your communities and learn as much as you can!" urges Julian. “Happy International Indigenous Languages Day! Mesiyh tl’a ‘awitze.”
Whether you're a language enthusiast, educator, or simply curious about Indigenous cultures, there are countless ways to get involved and make a meaningful impact. From volunteering at language immersion programs to supporting local language initiatives, your participation can help preserve and promote these languages. Take this time to embrace the beauty and resilience of Indigenous languages, celebrating their enduring legacy on this special day and beyond.
