When Care Meets Communities: Perspectives of CSFS Healthcare Staff

At Carrier Sekani Family Services (CSFS), our approach to care is beyond service delivery, it is a genuine commitment to the well-being of the communities we serve. This approach shapes how substance use care is delivered, with a focus on expanding access to treatment and offering Indigenous people options to wellness across Northern BC.

This work is made possible by our health professionals who are highly qualified and passionate about the holistic wellness of communities. We’re spotlighting CSFS staff who play a vital role in supporting community members through substance use withdrawal and recovery. They specialize in providing care that is both clinically informed and culturally grounded.

Colleen Booth, CSFS Family Nurse Practitioner, and Catherine Higgins, CSFS Registered Nurse, both share insights into their experiences working with communities.

For Colleen, her work is deeply rooted in everyday interactions with people and practices that have proven to yield positive results.

"I really feel like our relationship with communities, as well as our trauma-informed approach, is the way we help people navigate their substance use. In the outreach detoxes we've done at Ormond Lake, we're able to help people feel comfortable and well so they can participate in the heart, head, and spirit work that happens on the land," shares Colleen.

That same sense of care extends to the nursing team. For nurses at CSFS, a great work-life balance and team culture makes their role rewarding. The work they do is supported by collaboration and mutual support.

"The work environment at CSFS is incredibly supportive. I work alongside a team of nurse practitioners and allied health professionals, and there is a strong culture of collaboration and care in everything we do. That support helps us continue showing up for one another and for the people and communities we serve," says Catherine.

To all healthcare workers, thank you for your dedication and for the meaningful difference you make in families and communities.
