At Carrier Sekani Family Services, culture is at the centre of everything we do. One of the ways we put that commitment into practice is through our recruitment process.

The Human Resources department now has an Indigenous Talent and Engagement Lead, a role that helps nurture Indigenous talent and representation across the workforce. In this profile, we get to know Angela and learn more about how she supports Indigenous applicants and communities through her work.

Can you share a little about yourself?

My name is Angela Gervais, and I’m the Indigenous Talent and Engagement Lead. I am a Metis woman, born and raised in Prince George, with heritage connected to the Red River Settlement. I am proud to support Indigenous applicants who are seeking employment at CSFS.

What does your day-to-day work look like?

In this role, I have the privilege of building meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities and peoples, supporting recruitment efforts, and helping create pathways for Indigenous talent to join CSFS.

This means connecting with Bands, Nations, and community organizations, supporting initiatives that strengthen retention and engagement, attending Career Fairs and other events within our communities.

What drew you to this work?

I was drawn to this work through a deep commitment to community and creating opportunities for Indigenous peoples. My background and lived experience have shown me the importance of representation and culturally safe workplaces.

How does your work support or impact Indigenous communities?

I help Indigenous communities access meaningful job opportunities. This includes listening to Indigenous voices, promoting culturally appropriate practices, and building trust over time through honest relationships. My work goes beyond hiring. I’m helping to create workplaces where Indigenous employees feel welcomed, respected, and are supported to succeed.

I hope to contribute to lasting, systemic change in how CSFS engages with and supports Indigenous talent. This includes increasing representation across all levels, improving retention, and strengthening relationships with communities.

What would you like people to know about your role?

I’d like people to understand that this work goes far beyond recruitment. It’s about relationships, trust, and accountability. It requires ongoing learning, listening, and a willingness to challenge existing systems.

It’s also important to recognize that meaningful engagement with Indigenous communities takes time and must be grounded in respect and reciprocity. When done well, this work benefits not only Indigenous communities but CSFS as well.

The Indigenous Talent and Engagement Lead can assist with job inquiries and answer questions related to applications, how to apply through the CSFS website, cover letter and resume writing, interview preparation, and helping potential applicants understand what it is like to work at Carrier Sekani Family Services. Applicants from CSFS member Nations who need assistance can reach out to Angela at agervais@csfs.org
