The Healing Fire, initiated in February 2023 by the CSFS Family Preservation (Housing) program, celebrated its third-year anniversary on March 11, 2026. Indigenous service providers, youths, Elders, and communities gathered to commemorate the Healing Fire at the Prince George Courthouse. There were approximately 600 people in attendance throughout the day.
As people gathered around the fires, stories were shared, people were smudged and the sounds of drumming and singing filled the atmosphere. Attendees shared food including burgers, hotdogs, bannock and soup. Haircuts were offered and care packages were distributed to those who needed them.
“The Healing Fire represents the support and care that people need to become healthy in society. What a person needs is to be heard and understood. We ask one simple question: What can we do for you?” said Jim Lambert, Prince George Urban Indigenous Coalition Coordinator.
The Healing Fire began as a way for communities to reach out to individuals experiencing homelessness. Over time, the gatherings have grown into a space where people come together to experience community, support and care.
“Some people join the Healing Fire for drumming, some join for smudging, and others come for a feeling of community and belonging. It means a great deal for people to practice culture openly,” said Akhil Kumar, CSFS Family Preservation Outreach Coordinator.
As the Healing Fire continues monthly, Akhil expresses hopes for the future. “We would love to see the healing fire in every urban community and expand our partnerships so we can have more resources, donations and supports available for people.”
We extend our appreciation to the Prince George Urban Indigenous Coalition, who generously sponsored this month’s event. Partners, sponsors and all contributors help make the Healing Fires possible.
