This spring the CSFS Child and Youth Mental Health department had a sweater design competition for youth to showcase their artistic talents. There were many great submissions from youth emphasizing the importance of mental health. A committee chose the winner of the contest, Dawn-Star Charlie. The outcome was impactful and carefully designed, with each element telling a story. Dawn’s artist description of the piece lays out every detail of the design:
“This design was created to symbolize that mental health affects everyone and that no one should have to face their struggles alone. The large green awareness ribbon represents support, hope, healing, and the importance of bringing attention to mental health.
The many colorful hands reaching toward the center represent people from all backgrounds, ages, cultures, and experiences coming together to offer help, understanding, and compassion. At the bottom, the hands joining together symbolize unity, connection, and the reminder that support is always within reach when we choose to stand together.
The words “Mental Health Matters” placed within the ribbon reinforce the message that every person’s mental well-being is important and deserves recognition, care, and respect. The butterfly near the center represents growth, transformation, and the possibility of healing, reminding us that recovery and positive change are possible even after difficult times.
Overall, this design is a visual reminder that through awareness, acceptance, and community support, we can help break the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage others to reach out, speak up, and know they are never alone.”
These sweaters will be distributed to communities through the mental health teams.
