Questions or feeling unsure? Contact our team.
The Sobering Centre is a 10-bed, non-medical facility operated by Carrier Sekani Family Services in partnership with the Province of British Columbia and Northern Health.
The centre provides a safe place to rest overnight for people who are intoxicated from alcohol or other substances. Stays range from a minimum of 4 hours to a maximum of 12 hours, depending on the time of arrival. During extreme weather conditions, the centre may also operate as a warming station in winter and a hydration station in summer as part of its harm reduction model.
This service helps reduce harm, support personal safety and connect people to additional services when needed.
To use the Sobering Centre, individuals must meet the following criteria. These requirements help ensure everyone’s safety in a non-medical setting.
Individuals must:
• Be 18 years of age or older
• Be intoxicated from alcohol or other substances
• Not require medical care
• Be able to safely stay in a non-medical environment
The Sobering Centre is not able to support individuals who:
• Have had seizures within the past 12 months
• Are insulin-dependent for diabetes management
• Require medical attention for a head injury or other acute conditions
If someone does not meet these criteria, staff will help identify other appropriate support options when possible.
