About the Program

Intensive Family Therapeutic Services (IFTS) provides short-term, intensive support to families when children are at risk of coming into care. The goal is to increase safety, strengthen relationships and keep children with their families whenever it is safe to do so.

Our clinicians meet with families in their homes or in the community. They use counselling approaches such as Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive-Behavioural strategies and parenting skills training, tailored to each family’s strengths, culture and goals.

These services includes two streams:

  • Parents and Children Together (PACT) offers longer-term, moderate-intensity support:
  • Services typically last about three months
  • Clinicians spend two to four hours per week working directly with the family
  • Referral can be made by any Carrier Sekani Family Services (CSFS) program

PACT focuses on strengthening parenting skills, relationships and day-to-day routines so families can build lasting change over time.

  • Intensive Family Therapeutic Services (IFTS) is a crisis-focused, high-intensity program based on the Homebuilders model:
  • Services typically last about four weeks
  • Clinicians spend eight to 10 hours per week working directly with the family
  • Referrals are made by the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) when a child is at imminent risk of removal
  • Intake happens within 24 hours after the referral is received

When services are finished, families can request a booster session to help maintain progress and revisit strategies that were helpful.

Who This Serves

  • Families living in the Prince George area
  • Parents and caregivers involved with the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD)
  • Families whose children are at risk of coming into care or returning to care

Eligibility

For Intensive Family Therapeutic Services (IFTS):

  • Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) involvement is required
  • A referral must come from an MCFD social worker when a child is at imminent risk of removal

For Parents and Children Together (PACT):

  • Referral can be made by any Carrier Sekani Family Services (CSFS) program

Families cannot self-refer, but can talk with their worker about whether IFTS or PACT is a good fit.
