Carrier Sekani Family Services’ Bridging to Employment program in Prince George is helping to raise funds for the Prince George Humane Society.
The program helps people overcome barriers to education and provides them with the skillset to find employment. As part of a Leadership initiative, CSFS’ Bridging to Employment program is hosting a bake sale to help the Humane Society keep its doors open.
The Prince George Humane Society has been severely under-funded the past few months, and has been at risk of closing forever. With the proceeds from CSFS’s fundraiser, the hope is that the Humane Society will be able to remain open, and continue to provide an invaluable service.
Tianna Liimatainen, receptionist at the Humane Society, says that due to the nature of a community-based, non-profit charity, the funding is unpredictable.
“Donor funds were down and expenses were up this year,” says Liimatainen. “We took in a lot of animals this year as compared to last year, and the donor funding wasn’t the same as last year either. In a shelter and community-based charity place, there’s lulls, so we get donations for periods of times.”
When the community is able to donate, it gives Liimatainen hope. “It’s really heartwarming and really rewarding, and it makes you remember why you do the things you do and makes you feel like there’s still hope for the future.
With the upcoming fundraiser, Liimatainen says that “it shows the rest of the community that we’re all here to support each other, we’re all in it together.”
Liimatainen and the Humane Society would like to give “a huge tail-wagging thank you to the community for the continuous support.”
The bake sale will be running on October 25, from 11am to 1pm, at the Native Friendship Centre on 1600 3rd Avenue. Bridging to Employment will also be volunteering at the Humane Society.
More to come tomorrow after the bake sale!
