Carrier Culture Training - Available to External Partners

"I thought I knew a lot about Carrier culture and cross culture competency in service provision, but I still learned so much - that I didn't know I needed to know!" - Clinical Counsellor

We are pleased to welcome external service providers to our CSFS Nowh Guna ‘Our Way’ Carrier culture training. The training provides basic information on Carrier culture, as well as information to develop the attitudes and skills needed to provide culturally competent services. Our facilitators utilize the First Peoples Principles of Learning to engage participants through a myriad of experiential exercises, story sharing from elders and learning based on the local histories and cultures.

The learning objectives for the training are as follows:

-     Understand how stereotypes are formed and influence relationships
-     Take a look at pre-contact history and examples of how Carrier people lived
       before settlers arrived
-     Develop empathy and understanding around the effects of Colonization from a local context
-     Colonization impacts (Legislation, Indian Act +) through personal context / story sharing
-     Examine realities today for First peoples living in north central BC, on an off reserve
-     Dispel myths about First Nations people
-     Look at the language and dialects used in north central BC
-     Compare traditional and contemporary Carrier world views to European world views
-     Explore relationship and trust development strategies
-     Learn about the Carrier Clan and governance system (+ protocols) through a teaching feast
-     Examine strategies to respond to racism
-     Reflect on your personal cultural competencies and set goals
