Lifting Carrier Spirits

February 28, 2022

Carrier Sekani Family Services recently ran a social media campaign aimed at raising spirits of the communities in our region. Check out the summary here!

February can be a tough time of the year. The winter blues are in full-swing, and the holiday season has come and gone. Therefore, Carrier Sekani Family Services (CSFS) ran an online campaign called “Lifting Carrier Spirits” in an effort to bring some cheer to the communities we serve.

The week from February 7 – 14 was chalked full of online contests, livestreams, and videos. For the first day, we thought we’d spread the joy by asking people to nominate someone they know who does good deeds in their community for a chance to win a prize. Our winner, TJ Prince from Nee Tahi Buhn, nominated Ted Morris for bringing them their groceries, which is a great deed at a time like this. You can see the post here.

For the second day of Lifting Carrier Spirits, we asked you to share your favourite recipes, as good food is always a great way to raise one’s spirits. We saw so many recipes ranging from smoked salmon, bannock, stuffed peppers, BBQ moose, and so much more. Check out all of the recipes submitted here.

Following our call for recipes, we had a livestream titled “Grace Under Pressure”, where we were joined by CSFS’s Randall Brazzoni, Sarah Chaudhary, and Peggy West from Takla Lake First Nation. We discussed ways to brighten your mood during a time of year that can be quite dreary – both from a cultural perspective, as well as from mental health and wellness professionals. You can watch that livestream here.

Barby Skaling joined us the next day for a video on her thoughts on the importance of exercise, and eating your greens (once in a while…) to lift your spirits. You can watch that video here:

As a Friday treat, we had a very special guest join us for another livestream – comedian Gerry Barrett. Laughter is one of the best medicines we have, and this livestream only proved that. We are so thankful that we were able to host such a great entertainer. Clips from that stream will be available soon.

Finally, to cap off Lifting Carrier Spirits, Peggy West joined us again for a video on the healing power of nature. Peggy shared her thoughts on how you can be in nature, wherever you happen to be – whether that’s in the ‘boonies’ or in the city. Listen to Peggy’s knowledge here:

Thank you to all who joined us for Lifting Carrier Spirits. We hope that you had some laughs, picked up a new way to care for yourself, and perhaps learned a new recipe!
