Hockey Player Shares Passion for the Game

Posted on September 18, 2026

Every year, CSFS’s Hockey Tournament brings communities, staff, and families together in a friendly and lively environment. Amongst this year’s players is a youth with a lifelong passion for the sport.

Lexi Erickson is a rising hockey player from Nadleh Whut’en First Nation who has been playing the sport since she could fit into skates. She shares her hockey journey, her experience at the CSFS Hockey Tournament, and why good sportsmanship matters.

Tell us about your hockey journey.

I’ve been on skates since I was three years old, so I’ve basically been playing hockey my whole life. I played house hockey until I was 11 years old, and then I joined a rep team called Northwest District. I’ve been playing competitive hockey ever since. I’ve also been called up to play in higher age groups over the past four years.

I’ve participated in Aboriginal tournaments, played in the Jamboree in Vancouver, and tried out for Team BC. I’ve made it to the final cut both times I’ve tried out, so this season I’m hoping to make the team and have that experience.

What do you enjoy most about hockey?

I enjoy the speed and the competitiveness of the game, but I also love the friendships. My teammates have become like a second family to me because we spend so much time together and get to know each other well.

There’s no doubt that my teammates always have my back, and that’s something I value. The friendships you build through hockey are just as important as the game itself.

What was your favourite moment from the CSFS Hockey Tournament?

I really enjoyed how respectful everyone was. There was still competition, but overall, everyone was there to have fun. The tournament creates an environment where people can enjoy the game while showing respect to one another.

The CSFS Hockey Tournament is also a family affair to us. My family looks forward to this event every year because they all get to participate. No matter what team I’m on, I get to play with or against one of my uncles and my dad.

What does good sportsmanship mean to you?

Good sportsmanship means respecting and uplifting each other during the game. Even in the heat of competition, it’s about helping someone up, showing respect on and off the ice, and recognizing that we all share the same love for the game no matter what jersey we’re wearing.

It’s important to respect your opponents, coaches, and referees. The way you act in a game reflects who you are, so I think showing kindness and good sportsmanship is important.

What are you looking forward to?

I’m heading into my final year of high school, so I’m excited about preparing for the next chapter. I hope to continue playing competitive hockey while pursuing my academic goals and representing my community.

I’m also looking forward to meeting new people and continuing to grow, not only as an athlete but as a person.

What message would you like to share with other players?

Anything is possible if you put your mind to it. You can play hard, fast, and physical while still leading with heart. Being a great player isn’t just about what’s on the scoresheet. It’s about how you treat your teammates, coaches, referees, and opponents.

Respect stays with you long after the final buzzer. Most importantly, have fun and work hard.
