Highway of Tears ‘Cleansing the Highway’ Walk & Forums

Posted on May 30, 2016

The Cleansing the Highway Walk and Forums event is being held to bring awareness to the many missing and murdered loved ones from Highway 16 in Northern British Columbia between Prince Rupert and Prince George. It is also being held to support northern communities to develop safety plans.

Ten years ago in 2006, a Symposium was organized in Prince George, BC to coordinate and address the issue of many Indigenous women going missing or being found murdered. At that time, there was a group of family members who walked from Prince Rupert to Prince George to help raise awareness.

To mark the 10th anniversary of that historical event, some families will walk that same highway to continue the awareness and help plan for community safety by presenting community forums along the Highway 16 corridor.

By conducting these forums, we will bring awareness not only to the front-line workers, but also to the community members that live in each of the communities along the Highway of Tears Corridor.

At the forums, the communities will be assisted in developing safety plans, as many of the cases in Northern British Columbia remain unsolved, and many loved ones are still missing. The numbers unfortunately only continue to increase.
