Originally from Hamilton, Ontario, Shannon Hand moved to Burns Lake in September 2024 to begin a new chapter with Carrier Sekani Family Services. After initially studying Chemistry, Shannon made the decision to pursue a career focused on supporting people and communities. She currently holds a Bachelor of Social Work with honours and a minor in Indigenous Studies. Shannon is now a Safe House Counsellor at CSFS.
When searching for work in British Columbia, Shannon came across the CSFS website and watched the Practice Differently video. This experience left a lasting impression that impacted the trajectory of her career.
“I was moved to tears, and I knew that CSFS was an organization that I wanted to be a part of,” Shannon shared. “The video showed me the commitment CSFS has to the wellness of the people they serve in a genuine, humble, and intentional way that centres community and their strengths at the core.”
For Shannon, social work is rooted in recognizing and building on the strengths that Indigenous people, families, and communities already possess.
“I believe that Indigenous people, as individuals, as families and as communities, have the tools and expertise they need to thrive. As a social worker, I get the opportunity to walk alongside people on their journey and help them recognize and access those tools.”
Relocating from a large city to Northern BC brought new experiences and opportunities for personal growth. Living in Burns Lake has given Shannon a deeper understanding of what community means.
“If I were to describe living in the North with one word, it would be growth. Moving to Burns Lake has taught me so much about what community truly means and how it looks in action. The culture of care, support, and community that CSFS embodies as an organization has been instrumental in helping me adjust to the North and become a connected member of my community,” she shared.
One experience that stands out for Shannon is the annual CSFS Hockey Tournament. “One of my favourite memories so far has been getting to participate in the CSFS hockey tournament as a player and seeing the care and effort of CSFS to create a safe and fun space for staff and community members. I have never had more fun in a hockey tournament than I did last year.”
Outside of work, Shannon enjoys spending time outdoors, exploring nature, and staying active with her one-year-old golden retriever, who often accompanies her on adventures.
Two years into her journey with CSFS, Shannon continues to look ahead. She hopes to keep learning, strengthening relationships, and supporting community wellness through her work.
