Carrier Sekani Family Services is very pleased to announce that they have received the “My PG Community Grant” of $500 to support the Red Dress Campaign.
The RED DRESS Project was created by Jaime Black six years ago to commemorate the many missing and murdered Indigenous women across Canada, and to bring awareness to the issue.
Jaime stated that “The empty red dress really evokes the absence of these women, but it also marks the absence of these women so we can’t forget that they’re gone.”
Black collected hundreds of donated red dresses which have been displayed in public spaces across the country, including the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
Tammy Meize and the CSFS Highway of Tears Coordinator, Brenda Wilson, organized the first Red Dress Campaign last year in Prince George.
In 2016, Mr. PG held a Red Dress Flag and volunteers stood along Highway 16 holding red dresses, while the Khast’an Drum Group from Lheidli T’enneh sang songs and drummed.
The event last year concluded with a gathering at Lheidli Tenneh Park where the dresses were hung, and speeches and entertainment were provided, concluding with a candlelight vigil.
Mary Teegee stated that “The Red Dress Campaign reminds all of us that the missing and murdered Indigenous girls and women are someone’s daughter, mother, sister, aunt. We cannot forget that there is much work that needs to be done in Canada so there is no need to ever hang another red dress.”
Carrier Sekani Family Services is planning to hold similar activities this year utilizing the PG Community Grant, which will be scheduled for September 2017.
