How We Practice Differently
Carrier Sekani Family Services is a nimble and flexible organization. A day working here is never the same. These are some of the ways our employees feel that we Practice Differently.
Carrier Sekani Family Services is not bound by the bureaucracy of other organizations. We start with culture and build programming on that.
We take into account where our clients are comfortable and how to meet people’s needs.
Working here has sparked curiosity in my own heritage and I have learned so much about Indigenous heritage as well.
CSFS is always looking for opportunities where people can bring things forward to develop an idea or program.

Employee Stories
Nursing
The collegial and collaborative environment allows me to work effectively with colleagues from various backgrounds to create a team-based approach to care. This approach ensures that we can provide comprehensive and holistic care to our patients.
-Celena Faulkner
CSFS Nurse Practictioner
“One of the things I appreciate most about working here is the supportive and like-minded community of individuals who are dedicated to providing the best possible care for our patients. The collegial and collaborative environment allows me to work effectively with colleagues from various backgrounds to create a team-based approach to care. This approach ensures that we can provide comprehensive and holistic care to our patients.
As a new NP, I have felt well supported by the mentorship of the experienced practitioners working for CSFS. I truly appreciate the emphasis on continuous learning and the willingness to support professional growth and development. I highly value the opportunity to practice to my full scope and have autonomy in my work but have never felt ‘alone’ in my practice while working for CSFS.
I have particularly enjoyed travelling to the member communities we serve, as it has allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of our patient’s unique needs and challenges. Growing up in northern BC, I have a strong affinity for the lands and the people who live here. Working for CSFS not only allows me to grow professionally but also to contribute to the well-being of these communities.”

Social Work
At CSFS, I know these kids and I know what their interests are. They know who I am and they know they can call me and rely on me.
– Adam Buchanan
CSFS Guardianship Social Worker
“As a Guardianship Social Worker, CSFS’s compensation is on par with the Ministry. Work-life balance and caseload however are better tenfold, it’s not even comparable. I have nine children and youth that I am the Guardian of. At the Ministry, I had 60-80 cases at a given time. It means that at CSFS, I know these kids and I know what their interests are. They know who I am and they know they can call me and rely on me.
I am involved in their lives instead of just being there to deal with problems. Before I was only there to put out fires, I didn’t have relationships. Now, I go on trips, have relationships, and take the kids to visit their communities and families. I get to watch them have fun and have their families be grateful. I get thanked for the work that I do.
At CSFS, when a child has a problem, there are many different ways that we can solve it. It’s not a cookie-cutter answer, it is tailored toward the best interest of the child. Caseloads are interwoven with other team members to keep families together.”

Professional & Administrative
I can attest that what we are doing at CSFS today is truly ground-breaking. I take great pride in knowing I am supporting a future where every Carrier Sekani child is able to reach their fullest potential.
– Stephanie Konefall
CSFS Jurisdiction Governance Advisor
“As the Director of Jurisdiction, my work is centered around the creation of new child welfare laws based in Carrier Sekani governance. This is exciting work in a fast-moving, but highly rewarding, environment. I take great pride in knowing the work I am doing today will serve communities, families, and children for generations to come.
In Jurisdiction, we are guided by the principle that “no one is left behind.” There is a strong sense of collaboration that creates an environment where we learn from one another and feel safe to lean on our team for support. Everyone who is here is here because they believe in the work, and that is a powerful thing.
I have been involved in Indigenous child welfare for over 15 years, and I can attest that what we are doing at CSFS today is truly ground-breaking. I take great pride in knowing I am supporting a future where every Carrier Sekani child is able to reach their fullest potential.”
