People living along the ‘Highway of Tears’ in north central British Columbia can rest assured that affordable travel will be available to them through the new BC Bus North service.
With Greyhound announcing service cuts to Northern BC routes taking effect June 1, 2017, the new service was very welcomed news. The new service launched on June 4th, 2018 using highway coaches with luggage racks and toilets.
The service provides one-way fares at either a $35 or $45 price point, per route, depending on how far people are travelling.
The Province will work with local communities to research the demand for transportation while funding the project for 12 months. Since launching the new service, 670 trips have been booked so far.
The new BC Bus North Service was developed when BC Transit and Pacific Western Transportation collaborated with the Province to provide transportation routes amidst Greyhound’s exit.
Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Claire Trevena, Prince George Mayor Lyn Hall, and interim BC Transit President and CEO Erinn Pinkerton met for a short bus ride and conversation about the newly launched BC Bus North service this afternoon.
“It’s definitely something I have been personally committed to and we are extremely pleased that there are more safe travel options for the north,” said Mary Teegee, Executive Director of Child and Family Services at Carrier Sekani Family Services.
“I applaud the work of municipalities, First Nations and government on the newly launched transit services. This is a good example of true partnership and effective collaboration. The north should be used as a model for the rest of the province since Greyhound has pulled their service out of the entire province of BC.”
